How Far I've Roamed: Decorating Memories Along the Way
Chasing the Horizon: North and South
Well, isn't that a question that gets you thinking? "What's the farthest north and south you've ever been?" I was pondering this just the other day, sipping my tea and gazing at the art prints for living room that my daughter picked out. Funny how a simple question can unlock a whole box of memories, scattered like seashells on a beach.
For me, the farthest north would have to be a trip to Alaska. Good gravy, that was something! We took a cruise, you see, and the sheer scale of everything just knocked my socks off. Glaciers calving into the sea with a rumble that went right through you. Eagles soaring overhead like they owned the place. And the light! Oh, the light was something else. A soft, diffused glow that made everything look like a painting.
Bringing the North Home
I remember trying to capture that feeling when I got back. I wanted to bring that Alaskan light into my home. So, I started looking at wall decor with softer, more muted tones. Think creamy whites, gentle blues, and the faintest hint of rose. Nothing too bold, mind you, just a whisper of those northern skies. I ended up finding a lovely landscape print for the living room that reminds me of those misty mornings in Juneau. It's amazing how art can bring back a memory so vividly.
Now, southward...that takes me to a completely different landscape altogether. It was a trip to the South Island of New Zealand. Another cruise, I am a sucker for those things! The trip included visiting botanical gardens, I do love those as well. That place was bursting with color! The flowers were like nothing I'd ever seen. Everything was so green and lush.
Echoes of the Equator
I remember being particularly struck by the bright wall art I saw everywhere. The locals really embraced vibrant colors and patterns. It felt so joyful and alive. It got me thinking about how our surroundings really do influence our mood. When I came home, I was determined to bring some of that energy into my own space.
A Touch of the Tropics in My Home
Of course, I didn't want to go overboard and turn my house into a tiki bar! But I did start incorporating brighter accents. A few colorful cushions on the sofa, a vase of vibrant blooms on the coffee table. And then I found the perfect piece of wall art for bedroom – a watercolor print with these incredible shades of turquoise, emerald, and fuchsia. Every time I look at it, I'm transported back to those lush New Zealand gardens. I swear, the colors are as uplifting as a sunny day. It just makes me happy to look at it.
It's funny how these travels, these experiences, seep into our lives and our homes. They change our perspective, even if it's just a little bit. I think that's why I love decorating so much. It's not just about making a space look pretty (though that's nice too!). It's about creating a space that reflects who you are, what you love, and where you've been. It can also inspire you as to where you want to go!
The Comforts of Home
Now, don't get me wrong, I love to travel. I'm always dreaming of the next adventure. But there's also something so wonderful about coming home. About sinking into my favorite armchair with a cup of tea and a good book. About being surrounded by the things that bring me joy. Those elements make you feel at peace.
And that's really what it's all about, isn't it? Creating a home that feels like a haven. A place where you can relax, recharge, and be yourself. A place that tells your story, one little detail at a time. Whether it's a piece of wall art that reminds you of a faraway land or a cozy blanket that wraps you in comfort. The most important thing is that it feels like *you.*
Speaking of comfort, I remember one time when I was in New Zealand. I was walking along the beach, and I found this beautiful piece of driftwood. It was all weathered and smooth, with these interesting shapes and textures. I knew I had to bring it home with me. I wasn't sure what I was going to do with it, but I just loved it! And it just felt like me, you know? I ended up putting it on a shelf in my living room, and it's been there ever since. It's just a simple piece of wood, but it brings me so much joy every time I look at it. It reminds me of that trip, that feeling of being connected to nature.
Personalizing Your Space: A Reflection of You
I suppose that’s what art, or really any decor, should do, right? Should remind you of good times and feel like you. It's not about following trends or trying to impress anyone else. It's about creating a space that makes you feel good. And that's something that everyone can do, no matter what their budget or their style.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I think I'll go put on my walking shoes and get out and do some exploring myself. Who knows, maybe my furthest north and south adventures will be topped!
