My First Internet?! Oh Honey, Let Me Tell You!

Dial-Up Days and Dazzling Discoveries

Remember dial-up? I can still hear that screeching modem sound in my head, like some robot having a very bad day. That was my introduction to the internet. I’m dating myself, I know! My kids, bless their hearts, can't even fathom a world without instant access to everything. Back then, connecting to the internet felt like a major accomplishment. Like you’d solved some complicated puzzle just to get to the starting line. And then you waited...and waited…while the pictures slowly materialized on the screen, one blurry line at a time. It was an exercise in patience, that’s for sure!

I remember thinking, "Is this it?". Honestly, the graphics were terrible and everything took forever. There was hardly any content. You'd type in your search, go make a cup of tea, come back and maybe something interesting had appeared. So different from today when you can watch streaming videos on your PHONE! But there was definitely a feeling that things were going to change.

My First Online Search: Truly Riveting

You want to know the very first thing I searched for? Don’t laugh. It was...wait for it...recipes for meatloaf. I was newly married, trying to be a proper housewife, and my mother-in-law made the BEST meatloaf. Of course, she wouldn't give me the recipe. Said it was a family secret. So, naturally, I turned to this brand-new internet thingy. I found about a hundred variations, printed them all out (using that dot-matrix printer that sounded like a machine gun), and proceeded to make the worst meatloaves imaginable. Each one a unique disaster. Apparently, there's more to cooking than just following a recipe! Mom's secret was probably love, or maybe just better ground beef.

Eventually, I did learn to make a decent meatloaf. My husband says it’s almost as good as his mom's. Which is high praise, coming from him! I've come a long way since then. Now I make all sorts of things thanks to the internet!

The Internet and Decorating: A Perfect Match

The internet has evolved so much. Now I find myself spending hours scrolling through Pinterest for ideas. I love finding inspiration for my home. I’m not talking about big renovations, but small touches that make a room feel cozier, more personal. Maybe it's looking at new art prints for the living room.

I was just thinking the other day about our living room. It needed something more. The walls were looking bare. We had family photos, of course, and a few landscape paintings that we picked up on vacation. But it felt unfinished. Then, I found a series of bright wall art online. I liked the colors and ordered two. They arrived last week. I asked my son to hang them for me because I didn't want to mess it up. As soon as he did, the change was amazing. The living room was transformed from ok to great. All from two pieces of wall art! It makes me happy whenever I walk by. I just wish the meatloaf recipes had worked out that easily!

Finding What Speaks to You

Choosing art for your home is so personal. What speaks to one person might not resonate with another. That's the beauty of it! It's about finding pieces that reflect your personality, your memories, your passions. If I’m being honest, I probably wouldn't have been brave enough to order those pieces of art without seeing them in person. Back in the day, you went to a store and bought what they had. No comparing a thousand different options, no reading reviews from other customers. The internet has definitely spoiled us!

These days, I look for pieces that evoke a sense of calm and happiness. I'm drawn to landscapes with vibrant colors or abstract pieces with interesting textures. Anything that makes me feel a little bit lighter, a little bit more inspired. Especially now. This stage in my life is about enjoying the small things, and making my home a true reflection of who I am.

From Dial-Up to Design Inspiration

It's funny to think about how far we've come. From the agonizingly slow dial-up days to having a world of information and inspiration at our fingertips. The internet has changed everything, including how we decorate our homes.

I still haven't mastered the art of the perfect meatloaf, but at least now I have a beautifully decorated living room to enjoy while I'm eating it.
